Set a password and the PDF can't be opened without it — by anyone, in any reader. This is real AES-256 encryption of the file's bytes, not a viewer-side flag, and it runs entirely in your browser: we never see the file or the password. Which also means nobody can recover the document if the password is lost. That's the point — store it somewhere safe.

AES-256 here means the file’s contents are actually encrypted — the same standard banks rely on, applied by qpdf, the tool professionals use for exactly this. Without the password the bytes are unreadable in any PDF reader; there is no viewer-side gimmick to bypass. The document’s structure is preserved: text stays selectable, links keep working, nothing is rasterized.
A lost password means a lost file. There is no reset email, no support ticket, no master key — we never had the file or the password, so there is nothing we could recover even if asked. That is precisely what makes the protection worth having. Keep the original copy somewhere safe, or the password in a password manager — ideally both.
The tool reads the file’s actual contents to work out what it is — no need to tell it, and a wrong file extension won’t fool it.
