- Why generate placeholders instead of using a placeholder service?
- A placeholder URL means every page load asks a third-party server for the image — slower previews, broken mockups when it is down, and a client presentation that depends on someone else’s uptime. A generated file is yours, works offline, and never disappears.
- PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG — which should I pick?
- SVG when the tooling accepts it: it is a few hundred bytes at any size and stays crisp. PNG for the widest compatibility. JPG or WebP only really matter if a build pipeline expects those extensions — for flat colour and a label, they save nothing worth having.
- What is the data URI copy for?
- It embeds the placeholder directly in your src attribute or CSS with no file at all — handy in prototypes and code sandboxes. Keep it for small sizes: data URIs bloat quickly, which is why the button warns past a sensible length.
